  • The First Fleet Arrives

    The First Fleet Arrives
    The first fleet arrives at Botany Bay, but moves the fleet to port Jackson and lands in Sydney Cove. The aboriginal people resist as soon as the tall ships arrive at port Jackson.

    A smallpox epidemic decimates the Eora Aboriginal people near port Jackson because they had no natural immunity to the diseases, having never encountering them before.

    The Hawkesbury and Nepean wars begin between the aboriginal people and the white invaders in NSW. Aboriginal people start attacking the sheep and cows because the Europeans were expanding and claiming the land.

    Aboriginal people begin to be moved to mission stations, where they are taught about European religion and culture. They were also used for cheap labour.
  • The Native Institution Opens

    Governor Macquarie opens a school for aboriginal children called the ‘Native Institution’. The local aboriginal people realize that the aim of the school is to distance the children from their families, and continued to pull their children out of the school. The native institution closed in 1820.

    Governor Arthur tries to force all of the aboriginal people on the east coast on to the Tasmanian peninsular. Tasmanian aborigines are forcibly removed to Flinders Island. The living conditions were so bad it killed many people.
