    People worked and lived in the countryside. People tended not to take people in sport in the agricultural society as in those times, they were a very work orientated society whose main priority was the production of food and so on. This meant they spent majority of their time working, even from a very young age and they had very little time for leisure and playing sports.

    Folk football is the name given to a type of medieval football. Folk Football was mostly played by the peasants and poorer people in the society and was believed to be the ancestor for all codes of modern football. It had very little rules and allowed any means necessary to move the ball to a goal, as long as it did not lead to manslaughter or murder.

    During the industrial revolution people worked for 15-18 hours a day, leaving the rest of the day for sleep and rest. When the Factory act in 1846 was introduced it meant people had more free time for leisure and to take part in sport and spectate. This lead to an increase in amount of people participating in sports

    Better transport meant that people could get to the coast and the hills easier to participate and spectate in sports. This meant Britain's trade influence continued to grow and increase and this was the key part to sport development within this country as new sports were then able to expand and grow worldwide e.g., cricket from India and the Caribbean.

    In 1848 the first set of football rules were drawn up at Cambridge university. This became particular influential in the development of subsequent codes, including association football. This lead to football becoming a more structured and organised sport.

    Influence of public schools
    Due to the 1870 Education act, public schools became available however only for the richer people who could afford it. Tom Arnold was a headmaster of a rugby school and aimed to reform to make it better for the working class considering they worked 70 hours a week. From then onward, public holidays were increased and also other things were created. This included parks, gardens, playing fields. This enabled people to play sports and was also a way for them to express themselves and have fun.

    FA introduce a tape from goal post to goal post which is used as a goal line. The line was made from one goal post to the other creating a goal line, in which the keeper normally stood. This meant that in order to score a goal, the ball had to fully cross the goal line

    The league format was established in 1888. These original league rules stated that teams' positions should be calculated from wins, draws, and losses, without further detail. A win awarded a team 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points. The team who finished top of the league with the most points, would be crowned champions. This made football more competitive.

    In 1891 Penalty Kicks introduced. This rule meant if a player was fouled inside the opposing teams box, then a penalty kick would be awarded if the referee deemed the tackle a foul. This meant the ball was placed on the penalty spot and allowed a player to have a free kick on goal against a keeper.

    3pm Saturday Kick off. On the 9th of October 1900, the first ever 3pm kickoff on a Saturday was played. In this era this was very uncommon as football was traditionally played a lot earlier in the day.

    The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the inaugural FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national association football teams. It took place in Uruguay from 13 to 30 July 1930. Countries from all over the world took part against each other to see who had the best football team.

    Substitutions Introduced. This new rule meant that teams now were allowed to sub players on for another player. This meant that if a player got injured, was playing bad or was too tired then the manager was able to sub them off and replace them with another player.

    In 1971 The FA finally recognised women's football. This then lead to the creation of the Women's football association (WFA). This meant that women's football was becoming more prominent and more structured.

    In 1992 the back pass rule brought in. This rule meant that goal keepers were no longer allowed to pick the ball up with their hands when passed to by a teammate. If a keeper touched the ball with their hands then a penalty kick would be awarded.

    Fourth official introduced. In football, the fourth official is an official who assists the referee and assistant referees from the side of the pitch. In football the fourth official is mostly responsible for making sure substitutions are done properly and to make sure the managers are abiding by the rules.

    Goal line technology was introduced to help the referees decide if the ball crossed the line or not. This technology enabled referees to see if the ball had fully crossed the line or not, meaning they could get the decision right every time as before this technology was introduced it was a very difficult job for a referee to completely know if the ball had fully crossed the line meaning mistakes were made.

    VAR Introduced
    VAR Introduced. In 2017 VAR was introduced and revolutionised the way referee refereed the game. Video assistant referee meant that referee were now able to go back and have a look at a certain moment in the game on a screen. VAR was brought in to limit the amount of mistakes or wrong calls being made by referees.

However this rule meant that the opposing team had to stand outside the box, and were not allowed to enter the box until the goal keeper had touched the ball
