History of Ethics in Psychology

    Tuskegee Syphilis Study

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study involved examining how African American men carried the disease. Participants were not told if they had the disease or not. Participants never received any information regarding how to treat syphilis and in turn, passed the disease on to their wives and children.
Why I chose this event: I found it interesting how this study was able to be carried out since it was conducted in an unethical way that ended up leading to unnecessary deaths.

    Nazi Concentration Camp Experiments

Nazi concentration camp experiments were mainly conducted on Jews, African Americans and homosexuals. These experiments were conducted by German physicians and would consist on manipulating factors such as sleep and food consumption.
Why I chose this event: The Holocaust itself was an inhumane event and with the added experiments, the entire situation was inhumane. I found it very interesting how these experiments were allowed and not frowned upon, especially by those conducting them.
  • Stanley Milgram Experiment

The Stanley Milgram Experiment involved roles where the "teacher" was a participant while the "learner" was an actor, however, this was not disclosed to the participant. If the learner got a question wrong, they would receive a shock. With each incorrect answer, the voltage would increase but the participant would have to continue as advised by the authority figure.
Why I chose this event: I found it very interesting how an individual's behavior may change when an authority figure is involved.

    Stanford Prison Experiment

The Stanford Prison Experiment was a mock prison experiment in which participants were given the role of either prisoner or prison guard. The purpose of this experiment was to examine how different participant's behaviors were based on which role they were given.
Why I chose this event: The idea of manipulating roles such as prisoner and prison guard is very interesting as a prisoner may feel very weak and cornered whereas the prison guard may feel powerful (which may lead to abuse in power).
