History of Computer Technology Timeline

  • The Mechanical Devices

    1830-1850
The Analytical Engine was a proposed mechanical general-purpose computer designed by Charles Babbage
Late in his life, Babbage sought ways to build a simplified version of the machine, and assembled a small part of it before his death
  • Electro-Mechanical Devices

    1937-41
    John Vincent Atanasoff
A stored-program computer is one which stores program instructions in electronic memory.
  • First Generation Computers: The Stored Program Computer

    1941-1956
Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was made by a partnershp between John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly. it was made of 18,000 vacuum tubes and 7000 resistors.
  • The Second Generation Computers: High-Level Programming Languages

    1956-1963
    Transistor computer
    University of Manchester's
they transistors instead of vacuum tubes.
the instructions of second generatoin computers could be stored inside the computer's memory. High-level languages such as COBOL and FORTRAN were used, and they are still used for some applications
  • Third Generation Computers: Mainframes

    1964-1971
    Intergreated Circuit
was invented in 1958 by Jack Kilby
It combined electronic components onto a small silicon disc(chip)
  • Fourth Generation Computers: The Personal Computer

    1971-Present
    Alan Kay
    laptop
Fourth Generation computers are the modern day computers. The Size started to go down with the improvement.
