  • First Fleet

    First Fleet
    On the 13th of May 1787, eleven ships consist of 2 Naval Ships, 6 Convict Ships and 3 Supply Ships, sailed from Great Britain and stopped in Australia (which they found), where the Aborigines were already living on the land. This was very significant event to Australia.
  • Australia’s First Bank opened

    Australia’s First Bank opened
    The first bank established in Australia in 1817, it was called The Bank of New South Wales (which was then renamed as Westpac). Edward Smith Hall was the first cashier and secretary. This was very important to Australia because that means Australia is getting wealthier.
  • Sydney University founded

     Sydney University founded
    In 1848, William Wentworth had the idea of expanding Sydney College into a university, and the plan was then signed on the 1st of October in 1850. On the 11th of October in 1852, which was two years later, University of Sydney was inaugurated, and the first principal was John Woolley. This was very essential for Australia’s education system back then, also provided a gathering place for students.

    As a result of Gold Rush settlement in 1854, immigrants from all over the world, e.g. Chinese, Europeans came to Australia for gold. New skills, techniques, ways of life, food, languages and celebrations were brought into Australia, which made this country very multi-cultured and unique.

    1891 The Great Strike
    The Great Strike in 1891 was one of Australia’s biggest industrial disputes. Workers at the Logan Downs Shearing Station in Queensland believed that their paying rates and conditions weren’t acceptable. This made many people see the limitation of industrial action.
  • Australia Flag was flown for the first time

     Australia Flag was flown for the first time
    On the 3rd of September 1901, the original design of Australia’s Flag was first flown in Melbourne, and this was then proclaimed as the National Flag Day. The design was chosen from a worldwide competition held after Australia’s federation. Even though the designs have changed a bit over the times, but it was very significant.

     Australia’s population reaches 4,455,000
    1911, Australia’s population hits 4,455,000 excluding the full-blooded Aborigines. Australia now has a population of over 21 million, with over 43 per cent of Australians born overseas or has one parent who was born overseas and people coming from around 200 different countries, Australia has become a multi cultured country.
  • 1914-1918 World War I

    1914-1918 World War I
    World War 1, Australian Imperial Force landed at Gallipoli on the 25th of April, they fought campaigns on the Western front and Middle East. They sacrificed themselves for the freedom and peace we have today. So we have a remembrance day every year to remember them.
  • ANZAC Day

     ANZAC Day
    ANZAC, (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day was officially named by the Acting Prime Minister, George Pearce and celebrated on the 25th of April in 1916. The celebration of ANZAC was a mark of respect for people who served and sacrificed their lives for the freedom we have today in the Great War for Civilisation.
  • 1918 Remembrance Day

    1918 Remembrance Day
    Remembrance is observed on the 11th of November every year to remember those for has sacrificed during the World War 1 in 1918 so that we can have the freedom that we have today. We show the respect by staying silent for around 3-5 minutes.
