    Motion in Art
    Approximately 5,200 years ago an old pottery bowl was discovered in Shahr-e Sukhteh, Iran, this bowl has five images painted around it showing phases of a goat leaping up to nip at a tree. This shows the early stages of animation through movement through art. This allows the viewer to have an imagination, and see a unique take on art.

  • Magic

    Magic
    What we now know as projecters, were once an invention deemed not possible from the viewpoint of many people. When this animation technique was first created and discovered, they were called "magic lanterns", and used frightening images to make many believe they were seeing the supernatural. The earliest known actual magic lanterns are usually credited to Christiaan Huygens or Athanasius Kircher.

    Enchanated Drawing
    A man named of J. Stuart Blackton, created who images making them come to life. He made a video titled "The enchanted Drawing", in this drawing he drew a cartoon face of a man, he adds a hat, a bottle of wine, a glass and a cigar. He removes these items from the page and he then holds the items in his hands as if pulling them directly off the paper. This idea of animation still amazes people to this day, and shows the wonders of animation.

    Dream of the Rarebit Fiend
    McCay become famous for his animation work, and he has been known for his comic strips, Dream of the Rarebit Fiend being one of them. This comic is about a horrible nightmare the character is experiencing, and in the end he awakes from his dreams. This is important in early animation because of the story it creates for the audiance and shows motion through still images.

    Funny Faces
    James Stuart Blackton created a three minute long video using a stop motion effect and cut out animation to create cartoon drawings that start to move and complete actions on their own. This video creates an effect on the viewer, from start to finsish where Blackton begins to draw his images and then the characters take action on their own.

    The First fully animated cartoon, and one of the earliest hand drawn animations, Fantasmagorie, by Emile Cohl. This animation is about one minute and 20 seconds, and follows a stick figure man that experiences objects morphing into other items. This film, even though short lived, was a very exciting and important piece in the history of animation.

    How A Mosquito operates
    This short film last six minutes and focuses on a very large mosquito who targets a man in his sleep. This cartoon was a transfer from comic strips to an animated film done by winsor McCay. This story is also known by the names of The Story of a Mosquito and Winsor McCay and his Jersey Skeeters. This is important to animation because its a very early work, and shows McCays progress.

    Gertie
    Winsor McCay was the first to create an animated film, 12 minutes long, with a dinosaur! Gertie the dinosaur was a dino that did tricks based off commands of her master.     Felix the Cat
    Otto Messmer created a cartoon show titled Felix the cat, in which Felix uses a bag of magic to free a princess from a warlike duke in another dimension. Felix became an icon in animation history and is important to animation because of the new take on animation and how technology had been updating.

    Steamboat Willie
    A short film created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, was the first debut of very famous characters Mickey Mouse and Mini Mouse. This film was called Steamboat Willie, and lasted 7 minutes and 42 seconds. This was the very first Disney cartoon with both sound from character and music at the same time.

    One major color process, and the most used color process through Hollywood from 1922-1952, Technicolor became known for its highly saturated color, and was commonly used for filming musicals such as The Wizard of Oz. This new technology really increased work in animation and made the audiance's imagination 10x stronger.
