the Monster because I have lived in its lair.” He said this about the war going on in his native land Cuba. Marti died fighting in Cuba in 1895. He is seen as a hero in Cuba today, passionate for his country and freedom. -
Spain responded to Cuba's uprising by sending Valeriano Weyler to restore order. Valeriano Weyler responded by forcing rebellious Cubans into concentration camps. An estimated 300,000 were sent there and thousands died from hunger and disease.

News of Weyler's cruelty spread throughout America through newspapers that would exaggerate things to sell, fanning America's desire to go to war with Spain.

The New York Journal published a private letter that Enrique Dupuy de Lôme wrote, a Spanish minister to the United States, to the Foreign Minister of Spain. A Cuban rebel stole the letter and leaked it to the newspaper, revealing the letter criticized President McKinley, calling him weak and a pushover. After the scandal, the Spanish government apologized but it fueled American support for the war.

Not very long after the de Lome letter was published America was outraged at Spain. President McKinley ordered the USS Maine to Cuba to bring American citizens back from Cuba to be out of danger. On February 15th, 1898, the ship blew up in the harbor of Havana. over 260 people were killed in this tragic event. no one knew it blew up till it was put in newspapers all over America.

The U.S declared war on Spain after public opinion highly favored it after yellow journaling blamed the bombing of the U.S.S Maine on "Spain". Spain complied with the U.S's demands but the U.S used it as an excuse to fire.

The American Fleet first steamed to the Philippines in April, the commodore George Dewey opened an attack on Spain's ships in Manila destroying every ship there, Americans joined forces with Filipino rebels and in August the Spanish troops there surrendered.

Famous land battle in Cuba near Santiago. After getting Kettle hill it made way for the attack on San Juan Hill. The U.S. did win this and Roosevelt was declared the "Hero of San Juan Hill" even though he and his units only played a minor role.

The United States and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty. The terms were Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam and Puerto Rico. Spain also sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.
