    Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia
    Seven children are represented for being excluded from the free public education school system based on their disabilities. The Board states that they do not have enough funding and would need ‘millions’ of dollars in order to accommodate children with special needs. The court ruled that the Board of Education is not allowed to deny or remove any child from their school system based on their mental incapability and must provide special services for these students.

    Board of Ed. of Hendrick Hudson Central School Dist., Westchester City. v. Rowley
    In this case, the board of education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District petitioned for the court that student Amy Rowley was not in need of a sign language interpreter.
    Her parents sued the school on the grounds that federal funding was not being used to provide the necessary services Amy needed to assist with her disability. The court ruled in favor of Amy and her parents, stating that Amy was not reaching her fullest potential and would indeed benefit from an interpreter.
  • Honig v. Doe

    Honig v. Doe
    When student, John Doe, was removed from school after he became violent with another student and school property. Jack Smith, a student in a similar situation, filed an action alongside Doe, against the school for expelling them. Superintendent, Bill Honig believed that they were a dangerous threat to others and therefore should not return to school. A “stay put” provision was created protecting handicapped students from suspension exceeding 10 days.
