  • Funding Approved

    Funding is approved to create SCC.
  • Dean and First Classes

    The founding executive dean of SCC is named : Dr. Marion G. Donaldson. SCC originally opens as Mesa Expansion Community College. It offers 100 night courses with a high expected enrollment.
  • SCC founded

    SCC was founded in September of 1969.
  • SCC Permanent Move

    SCC settles on land belonging to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The campus occupies 160 acres and the lease will expire in 1970.
  • Name Change

    The Arizona Legislature votes to change the schools' titles from "junior colleges" to "community college."
  • Honors Program Started

    SCC starts the first Honors Program in the MCCD system.
  • Night Enrollement Surge

    The MCCD system has more night students than day students enrolled.
  • Jane Fonda: Activist

    Actress Jane Fonda speaks out against the Vietnam War at SCC speaking engagement, which highlights the "open forum acceptance" at SCC.
  • Welcome Artie!

    The artichoke is adopted as the SCC mascot after a long dispute between students and the governing board. Students felt that too much attention was being paid to athletics and not academics. Changing the mascot was part of the solution.
  • Foundation Formed

    The MCC Foundation is established to seek out public and private donations.
  • Community Giving

    SCC offers free classes to members of the Pima Indian Community.
  • SCC Accredited

    SCC receives accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
  • Largest Enrollment

    MCCC have the largest enrollment of students in the country at 220,000+.
  • Planetarium

    The first of its kind in the district, SCC's planetarium is founded.
  • Natural Science Expansion

    The SCC Natural Sciences building opens which supports 6 different labs for different scientific disciplines.
  • National Science Grant

    SCC receives a $8.7 million grant from the National Science FOundation to share with two other colleges. It is meant to further training for middle school science teachers.
