    On the Day of Mourning is the day were the Aboriginal Australians protested against the British Colonisation of Australia. It was a protest for the callous treatment and the abduction of land over the last 150 years. The significance of the Day of Mourning is that it was the start of recovery towards equality for everyone, including Aboriginal people.

    Voting Rights for Australian Aborigines
    Up until the early 1960s, Aborigines had voting restrictions. In1962 the Commonwealth Electoral Act allowed Australian Aborigines to vote in Australian Federal Elections. This is a signifcant event because the Aborigines were one within step closer to achieve equality within Australian communities.

    The Gurindji Strike (Wave Hill Walk-Off)
    The Gurindji Strike was a walk-off by 200 Gurindji stockman and house servants at Wave Hill Cattle Station. They had previous owned approximately 3,250 km² of traditional land in the Northern Territory. It was led by Vincent Lingiari. It was a strike purely against the terrible work and living conditions, This is a sigfinicant event because it is the start of the legacy that will make Indigenous people equal as everyone else.

    The Holt Government, approved two amendments to the Australian constitution relating to Australian Aboriginals. This is a significant event because the referendum allowed Aboriginals to be included in the Australian population, achieving equality.

    In 1975, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam symbolically gave soil to the Guringji leader Vincent Lingiari. This is sigficant because the land was giving back the Gurindjin people.

    This event is national landmark that commemorates the reconciliation of Australia. This is a significant event because we remember the achievements towards equality.

    Reconciliation Australia
    Established by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation in 2001, the movement promotes reconciliation between the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islannders with Australian citizens and accept them into our community with equality. The significance of this movement is that the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders were treated as equals in the Australian communities.

    Kevin Rudd gave an apology speech directed to the Indigenous Australians as a motion to be voted on by the house. This event is sigfinicant because Kevin Rudd apologized on behalf on the country. The Indigenous applauded Kevin Rudd and the Indigenous peope have somewhat forgiven the government.

    This event occurs annually on June 3rd. It commemorates Eddie Koiki Mabo, who was a Torres Strait Islander, who protested for Indigenous land rights and led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia. This event is significant because it commemorates the person began a legacy in standing up for their rights.
