Hellen Keller Research Project

  • First Chapter Friday

We heard a story about war hero Roy Benevedez and i wondered how someone can hear about what heroic acts this man and other life saving people have performed and consider anything less that those acts of selfless courage heroic.
  • Peace Corps Volunteer Interview

This gave me insight into which kind of person dedicates their life to helping others, and made me discover that there are people with a desire to give up modern luxeries to help those in need, and that those people are truly heroic, but may not get the same recognition as other "heros" like athletes and geniuses that the media recognizes.
  • Hero's Journey Assignment

We learned the details of the assignment and were told to start thinking about a hero we'd like to choose. We saw a video of the subway hero as an example, and talked about characteristics of a hero. The subway hero made me wonder that if i were in his situation would i have risked my own safety to help a man who needed help. also it struck me that the subway hero was just a regular man, and that any regular person has the ability to help others.
  • Picked My Hero

I thought about how i would get an interview for this assignment, and had an idea to pick a deaf culture hero so that i could interview my ASL teacher Mrs. Reyna and learn about deaf culture. I asked Mrs. Reyna who she would suggest as a Deaf culture hero, and she said I King Jordan, any deaf celebrity or athlete, or Hellen Keller would be the most interesting subject for my research.
  • Library Visit

We went to the library as a class and were instructed to pick a biography of mature length on our hero. After looking up books in the database, i found that Hellen Keller had the most avalable iterature about her, so i checked out two biographies and saved the links to several database pages.
  • Characteristics of a Hero

The class was given list of significant people and assigned to catagorize them. we had a class discussion about the definition of a hero and different qualities considered heroic. i realized that geniuses who invented something that changed the world or inspired people to do good may be heros indirectly, even if their aim wasnt to help people, and they did what they did for other reasons.
  • Change the World Power Point- Day One

We watched a music video to John Mayor's song about change and analyzed the lyrics in groups using tone words. The song made me think about the reluctance people have to be heroic and change the world. the song talks about waiting on the world to change because we dont think we have the power to change it ourselves, and i wonder why people arent all given power to change the world, or if some people truly couldnt change the world if they tried.
  • Change the World Power Point- Day Two

We watched videos of kids raising money for charities and analyzed lyrics to a different song about the current generations power to change the world.I thought the video was sweet, but i dont remember as a child ever thinking about more than my own little world. i did however, always long to do things for attention, being childish and immature and i wonder if those kids did what they did out of their hearts of out of the childish selfishness that wouldve motivated me to do those things.
  • Wrote Blog Post 1

Wrote about my decision to select Hellen Keller as my research topic on posterous, and realized that if someone born without two of the senses that most people talke for granted could change the world, then why cant everyone who has those two senses in tact change the world and be a hero just as well.
  • DEAR

Read half of my first biograph, and my view of a hero changed when i read about Keller's persistance to change the world. I realized that she was a hero because she decided to be a hero and not because she needed to be, and maybe that if one desires to be heroic, they need to make that decision to see themselves as a hero.
  • 2nd Blog Post- Heros in Literture

turned in a blog post about characters in literature that i considered to be heros. this didnt change my views on heroism, but i enjoyed reliving some of my old favorite books and characters. i also realized that heros are written into literture as examples of the heroism that is missing from the world.
  • Reading Passages From Biographies

Hearing about other peoples heros opened my eyes to see that some people chose people that may have not been a hero to others, but that was a hero to them because they inspired them and gave them hope for achieving success in things they were interested in.
