Invented by Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz at Harvard University (Carlson 2010). Zuckerman was a sophomore in college. Facemash was made so students could compare who was "hot" and who was not. Zuckerman hacked Harvard's database to get actual photos of people and their real identities. This would be considered unethical and probably illegal today.

Zuckerberg charged with violating copyrights, breach of security, and violating individual privacy. He was reviewed for expulsion. Charges were dropped (Kirkpatrick 2010).
