    Tommy Tanaka states that there should be better reasons for a strike then this. He feels it is irresponsible for GFT to strike. He thinks just because the Legislature gets a 37% pay raise, idnt worth going on a strike for.
  • Anyone Can Vote on Strike Tomorrow

    Anyone whos shows up at tomorrow's union rally will be given a chance to vote a proposal to strike the Government of Guam. They cannot testify whether union or non-union, GovGuam or not, but if your there at 9 a.m you are able to vote. CHELU amd Operationg Engineers Local 3 are expected to attend.

    Calvo vetoes pay raises
    Gov. Paul Calvo vetoed Bill 535, which contained a controversial pay raise package for senators and top government administrators.The bill included $45 million for home mortgage revenue bonds and a $2 million bailout for Guam Memorial hospital.

    CHELU resigns all striking activity against Legislature and discontinues their support in the strike with the GFT and Operating Engineers Local 3.
  • Legislature raises slaries of themselves

    Legislature raises the salaries of themselves, their staff, government directors, and judges by 27%. This brings the Guam senatorial salary up to $26,000 a year , which is greater than what most senators make in the mainland.
  • The Strike Begins

    On January 12, a group of union teachers and other GovGuam employees went on strike for 52 consecutive days. The strike took place in Agana and Paseo. There were about 350-1,000 teachers and employess.
  • The GFT starts the first mass strike on Guam in regards to not getting the salaries they felt they deserved

    According to the union, there was an estimated 1,500 strikers. From there on, picket lines started to appear around Guam's public schools. Other then teachers, there were UOG/GCC facualty members, Operating Engineers Local 3 members, and school bus drivers that had joined the strike and did not return to their jobs.

    The DOE has fired 629 striking teachers and plans to hire 224 qualified teachers to replace them. Over 90% of the 649 employees fired are teachers.

    Police arrested 61 protesters at a sit-iin at the Legislature the biggest confrontation of the current 27-day-old strike against the Government of Guam.
    "Our original philosophy was to just move the outside" police spokesman stated "when they started to come back in and sit down we arrested them".
    Maricia Hartsock and Conrad Stinson were both dragged from the Legislature to patrol cars by police.

    The strike has ended. GFT calls it quits. It was based on a vote to release union members from thier commitment to the job action.
    "The strikes over, Period" stated GFT President Conrad Stinson "We declared unilateral peace"
