    New South Wales and Victoria gold rush begins. Sydney and Melbourne grow as cities.

    Electric Telograph, telephones, trams, gas and electric light were in use in 1851.

  • Ballarat Steam Engines.

    In 1855 there were 13 steam engines in Ballarat for Gold Mining purposes.

  • First Cast-Iron Foundry.

    In Melbourne, Scott Clow and Prebble opened the first Cast-Iron Foundry,

  • Ballarat Steam Engines.

    By 1858 Ballarat had 135 steam engines in use.

  • Rolling Mill.

    A Rolling Mill was established in Melbourne by Enoch Hughes.

  • Ten Foundries.

    Ballarat had ten foundries, eight in use for mining equipment and the other two in use for repairing and producing farming equipment.

    342 steam engines were being used in Ballarat by 1861.
