Globalization Timeline

  • 1440

    Creation of the Printing Press

    Creation of the Printing Press
In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg created the first printing press. The printing press made printing much more easy and efficient. I think that the printing press contributed to globalization because it spread across the world, making printing in large quantities possible. The printing press was used to print out Bibles, books, and pamphlets, allowing people to spread their beliefs and ideas to their peers. The printing press made mass communication achievable.
  • Founding of United Nations

After many meetings prior, representatives of 50 nations met in San Francisco to finalise the charter of the United Nations. The United Nations worked to learn upon the mistakes they made when creating the League of Nations. On October 24, 1945 the Senate approved the United Nations Charter. I think that this was an important contributor to globalization because it created a system to maintain peace between many nations.
  • World Wide Web created

    World Wide Web created
Tim Berners-Lee first created the World Wide Web with intentions to make an easy way for scientists and institutions to share information instantly. Expanding upon his original web server, later the software was available to the public. I think that the World Wide Web contributed to globalization because it allowed people from all over the world to share information and connect.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

As the Cold War began to come to an end, the spokesman from the Eastern Communist party in Germany decided to change their relations with the West. On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall had begun to be broken down. I think that this was an event that contributed to globalization because while the fall of the wall did not end communism, it created a sense of doom over the few countries that were still ruled by communism. Democracy was starting to rise, uniting all nations together instead of apart.
  • Soviet Union dissolved

    Soviet Union dissolved
On December 25, 1991 the leader of the Soviet Union handed over his powers, the nuclear launch codes, and his office. One day later on December 26, 1991 the Republics of the Soviet Union were officially granted the power to self-govern. I think that this was a contributing factor to globalization because it released tensions between nations, and made it seem possible for everyone to get along for at least the time being.
  • First SMS message sent

    First SMS message sent
After the first text message was sent, the world's technology and social norms were forever changed. Texting made communication fast and easy. I think that the first text message contributed to globalization because it created a way for others to talk to each other from all around the world.
  • Facebook created

    Facebook created
Soon after Facebook was created, the website no longer required private access and was available to everyone. I think that Facebook contributed to globalization because it not only created a way of communication between people from all over the world, but allowed others to share pictures, breaking news, and ideas. Facebook allowed Presidents, celebrities, and the average person to share posts creating the technological culture we know today.
