  • Clermont, the first commercial steamboat crosses up the Hudson River

    The Clermont was invented by Robert Fulton. Fulton's estate was accually bought and he took the rights to run the steamboats all the way to the suppreme court. He lost in the trial to the government who took control of the steamboat opperateing.
  • Congress charters the second bank in America

    Congress charters the second bank in America
    Congress chartered the second bank in America. The bank is located in Philadelphia, Pennslyvania, and was built in 1816. The bank was chartered for 20 years like the first bank, and when the charterwas not renewed it became a normal bank for 5 years. It eventually went bankrupt in 1841
  • US and Britain sign the Rush-Bagot Treaty limiting their naval presence in the Great Lakes

    The United States and Britain both decide that it would be best to limit their naval forces on the Great Lakes. Lake Ontario and lake Charlameign were only allowed 1 vessel (no more than a 100 tons) with one cannon. On the other lakes they were allowed "like vessels" with "like force". This laid the demiliterized border between the US and Canada.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The states were divided 11 free states to 11 slave states. So The government made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. It also banned slaves in the Lousiana purchase area.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty: US receives florida from Spain.

    In this treaty the US received Florida, the Rocky Mountains, and up west to the Pacific Coast. This treaty was done during a weakened spanish power, and in return for all this land, the US would pay the spanish government $5,000,000. At the time this was a humongous amount of money, but we did get most of the territory of the modern United States from this deal made with Spain.

    President Monroe anounces what is known as the Monroe Doctrine
    President Monroe made a doctrine anouncing that the United States would appose any European country that would attempt to regain Latin American Lands in the western hemisphere. Monroe also states that Europeans can no longer colonize the US territory.

    Henry Clay proposed the plan known as the American System
    This plan suggested an establishment of stronger tariffs. This would encourage industrial developement.
  • Andrew Jackson wins the presidency.

    Andrew Jackson wins the presidency.
    Andrew Jackson becomes the 7th president of the United States. He was a hero of the War of 1812, Jackson was seen as a great man and leader. He started the democratic party.
  • Congress passes the Indian Removal Act.

    Congress passed a law stateing all Native Americans living in the Eastern United States to move to a spot in present day Oklaholma. They were forced to move out by the US military. This move was known as the trail of Tears.

    Nat Turner starts a slave revolt
    Nat Turner and his followers killed about 60 white people before they were captured. Due to this, pro-slavery states passed strickter codes, and limited slave activiteies. Nat was eventually executed for his crimes.

    The American Anti-Slavery Society called for racial justice. These peopler wanted to outlaw slavery.Frederick Douglas, an escaped slave tells of the horrors of slavery, and brought many people to the Anti-Slavery movement.

    Gathering of the womans rights convention at Seneca Falls
    100 out of 300 signed the Declaration of Sentiments, which called for womens rights (particularly to vote). Susan B. Anthony and Staton also protested in New York.
