In 1872 the credit mobilier scandal happened. The scandal was because of illegal manipulation of contracts by a construction and a finance company that was associated with the building of the Union pacific Railroad. Government officials were accused of accepting bribes.

Andrew Carnegie in 1872 traveled to England to meet a person named Henry Bessemer. Henry Bessemer was a person who had a technique in making steel and Andrew Carnegie demanded for steel railroad pieces. Andrew Carnegie then traveled back to America with the knowledge he had in building railroad pieces with steel and had the intent on expanding his business with steel.

On November 2nd of 1880 the republican James Garfield was elected president. Garfield beats out Winfield Hancock with more votes by the press.

Garfield's assassin was Charles J. Guiteau, who wanted revenge against Garfield for an imagined political debt and to elevate Chester A. Arthur to the presidency. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting.

The Pendleton Act provided that federal government jobs be awarded on the basis of merit and that government employees be selected through competitive exams. The act also made it unlawful to fire or demote for political reasons employees who were covered by the law.

Democrat Grover Cleveland defeats Republican James Blaine and is elected President of the United States. Cleveland's popular vote margin of victory is 62,683 votes out more than 10 million cast.

A rally in Chicago's Haymarket Square in support of striking workers from McCormick Harvester Works ends when a bomb is thrown, killing six policemen and wounding more than 60 others. Eight anarchists are convicted of the crime, but all supporters of unions and the eight-hour day are found guilty by association in the public eye. The influence of the Knights of Labor quickly diminishes; membership will decline by more than 50% over the next year.
