    Hinton Helper published this work in 1857, in it he said that poor southern whites should end slavery because it was an economic problem, one simply could not compete with slave labor. While it was banned in much of the South, in the North Republicans passed it out in their campaign pamphlets, further making the South view the North as radicals.

    John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
    Was the radical abolitionist, John Brown's attempt to start a slave uprising in Virginia, he wanted to do so by seizing the Federal Arsenal in Harpers Ferry to provide weapons. It resulted in the death of some of his followers and his execution. In the north he was praised as a hero fighting for a cause, which greatly offended the south.

    After years of dealing with federal policies it felt were unconstitutional, along with believing that most Northerners were radical abolitionists due events such as the reactions to John Brown's execution, South Carolina delegates met and decided to secede from the Union.The state felt it was justified because by Compact Theory for leaving the Union, and other southern states such as Texas and Floridea soon followed.
