    Before Imperialism, Vietnam was invaded and ruled with varying degrees of success and failure by the Chinese. Also, there were small rubber plantations all over the area. And Vietnam suffered over rising taxes and high rents for houses. Workers in factories, coal miners, and plantations labored in horrible working conditions.

    Naploeon invades French Indochina
    In the 1840's church leaders and capitalists wanted an overseas market. So Napoleon ordered an invasion on French Indochina (or Vietnam) soon after that the French had began to add Laos Cambodia and other Northern Vietnam territory. These combined states would soon become French Indochina. Since the French had four time as much land they devoted to rice production but the peasant consumption of rice decresed because alot of the rice was exported. This reduction set the stage for resistance.

    The reason France came to China was for the need of rubber which was made by burning rubber trees which was needed for manufacturing cars. Church leaders and capitalists who wanted a bigger part of the overseas market asked for military help. Then the Emperor Napoleon III had the French army invade southern Vietnam.

    The French invaded Vietnam because France wanted to trade with Inner China. They wanted to have Vietnam because they thought they could get to China through Vietnam. But soon after they realized that they could not after the colonization was already complete. Also, the French wanted rubber so then they burned the rubber trees that were in Vietnam.

    When the French invaded Vietnam, they treated the people there like second class people. The French ruled with an iron fist but when Japan invaded Vietnam, Japan rule was much worse. Japan was very horrible at ruling. To stop this, a man named Ho Chi Minh formed a band of 200 men and began to revolt against the French.

    Response to Imperialism
    The people responded to Imperialism by trying to regain its independance. Doing this was successful. But Vietnam was not fully affected by Imperialism. Also, in response to Imperialism, Vietnam sought to build its military forces up trying to be capible of protecting power across Asia and the Pacific. Ironicly, this approach led to Japan's defeat and occupation and it continued on its power.

    Other events that occured
    in 1957, after the Korean War and before the French Indochina War the world was just beginning to race with weapons and rockets. Also the race to the moon began the race to the moon was in full swing in 1960.

    Most Significant event
    The most significant event that happened in 1965 was right after World War I, it was the great divide between Vietnam and Soviet Union. This was significant because the Vietnam leaders saw power and ambitions of the Soviet Union and they thought of them as a threat.
