French and Indian War to First Shots at Lexington and Concord (Nick Deas and Scott Driggers)

  • End of Salutary Neglect

    Britain takes more direct control over the colonies. This leads to taxes and other demands on the colonies that upset them and make them take on a more negative view of Great Britain.
  • Treaty of Paris

    This treaty ended the French and Indian war. It ceded much of the area west of the Appalachian Mountains to Britain, and it ceded some of the Caribbeans to France.
  • Proclomation Line of 1763

    Act that created a line over which the Colonists should not cross. This prevented them from accessing the rich farm land in the Ohio River Valley that they had just fought for. It was supposed to prevent war against the Pontiac Indians, but it angered the colonists.
  • Sugar Act

    Lowered tax on molasses to raise revenue in Britain. Also helped to prevent smuggling. Meant to direct all money from molasses sales toward Britain rather than other countries. Vice-Admiralty courts were put into effect where smugglers were presumed guilty while walking in.
  • Stamp Act

    A tax on thirteen different types of printed documents including such trivial goods like playing cards. This was one of the taxes that the colonists hated.
  • Quartering Act

    One of the intolerable acts. It said that soldiers could demand room and board from any home-owning person. This was viewed as tyrannical by the colonists, and helped fuel rebellious fervor.

    Stamp Act Congress

    Nine representatives from the colonies met to discuss the stamp act. They concluded the act was unconstitutional because it was taxation without representation.
  • Declaratory Act

    The British passed the Declaratory Act, which declared that Britain had complete legaslative power over the Colonies
  • Repeal of the Stamp Act

    To help cool down the colonists, parliament voted to repeal the stamp act.

    Townshend Acts

    The acts included the Revenue act, Commissioners of Customs Act, Vice Admirality Act, and New York Restraining Act. These were four acts passed by the British to try to control the colonies through suspension of the right to assemble, and strict tax collection policies.

    Thomas Jefferson begins to take lead in the colonies
  • Boston Massacre

    British troops killed five colonists in Boston Massachusets. This helped unite the colonists against the British, and fuel revolutionary fervor.
  • Tea Act

    British tried to bail out the East India Tea Company. Lowered cost of tea as well as granting the company a monopoly on tea sales. Tea was cheaper because of this act, but it still angered the colonists. Forced colonists to buy tea directly from East India Tea Company.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Sons of Liberty dressing up as indians threw tea into the Boston harbor to protest the Tea Act.
  • Quebec Act

    This act ceded the Ohio river valley to Quebec. This took the land away from the colonies who had fought for it, angering them more. It also allowed the catholic and french-speaking Quebecois to move to area very close to the English protestants, creating tension.
  • First shot fired in the Revolution

    The British tried to capture John Hancock and Sam Adams in Lexington and find gunpowder in Concord. In these two cities, there was a battle between the british troops and and the colonists. This was the first shot of the war
