Douglass found a newspaper in Rochester, New York named Te North Star. In Rochester, he helped to smuggle escaped slaves to Cananda via the Underground Railroad.

After the horrfying Cival War ended, Fredrick had held many government offices. He continued working for human rights. Until he died in Washington D.C. on Febuary 20,1895
