    Frederick Douglass was born in Talbot County, Maryland, as a slave to his mother whose name was Harriet Bailey.

    Douglass was a young boy when he was taken to Wye House Plantation where he would work/ be on his own for the first time.

    Douglass asks Sophia if she can teach him how to read and write. Her husband Hugh eventually stops the teaching cause he feels it gives the slaves better opportunities to rebel.

    In 1832 Frederick learns to read and write from a few boys living next door when he was working for Master Thomas Auld. Douglass then gives the boys his bread in exchange for knowledge of reading and writing.

    Douglass learns how to caulk at a shipyard. Frederick gets severely injured after a fight and Master Hugh Auld takes him and has him work in the shipyard as foremen. Frederick learns to be good at caulking and earns wages which he has to turn into Master Hugh Auld.

    Douglass knowing the risk tried to escape with a few other slaves on a canoe during the middle of the night. He knew the risk that if they were caught that they may die or severely punished. They were caught and were punished by being dragged on horseback.
