Frederick Douglass' Life

  • Birth

    On February 20,1818, Frederick Augusta Washington Bailey was born in Tuckahoe,Talbot County,Maryland. He was automatically born into slavery. When he was young he worked inside the houses. He would play with the children in the house if there were any. You might say that he had it easy, but that's not true.
  • The Move

    Frederick gets moved to Wye River Plantation with his siblings Perry,Sarah,and Eliza.When Douglass was about six years old, his grandmother walked with him the twelve miles from his childhood cabin to the Wye House plantation where he would begin work as a slave.This plantation was the home of his master, Aaron Anthony. He was considered an overseer. Rumor was that Aaron was Frederick father.
  • Death

    Harriet Bailey,his mother, dies on February 20,1826. She was seperated from Douglass when he was only an infant.She would coem nd visit him at night to get him asleep. He never saw her in the morning because she had to work on the fields.The last time that they saw eachother was in 1825.
  • Learning How To Read&Write

    In 1827, Sophia Auld began teaching Frederick how to read and write even though it was illegal. When her husband found out what she was doing he ecame furious. He said that if she taught Douglass how to read he would know more. This made Frederic want to learn how to read and write even more.
  • Secretley Learning

    In 1829-1830, Frederick was secretly learning how to read and write by himself.
  • The Escape Plan

    Frederick plans to escape, but Frederick and other plotters get jailed in Easton. After he was sent to jail,he was sent back to Baltimore by Thomas Auld. When he went back to Baltimore he got a job, and learned how to caulk.
  • Escape from SLAVERY

    On Septemer 3,1838, Frederick escaped from slavery, moved to New York, and changed his name to Johnson. He traveled to NewYork on train and boat.While he was in New York he married Anna Murray on September 15. On September 17 heleaves with his wife for New Bedford,, Massachusetts, where he worked as a caulker.
  • First Child is Born!

    On October 9,1840, Frederick's son Lewis Henry was born. He was interactive in many things. He fought for one of the first official African American units in the United States during the Civil War, the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He took part in the First Battle of Fort Wagner on July 10, 1863.
  • Last Great Address

    1894, January delivers his last great address, "Lessons of the Hour," a powerful burst of his old-time fury against lynch law in the South. This speech was emotnal. He talked about how he was against t lynching law. They say that this was his last great address "speech" because he died a few years later.
  • Painful Death

    On February 20,1895, Douglass dies of an Myocardial Infarction. A Myocardial Infraction is a heart attack that happens when blood flows to a part of your heart and is blocked for a long time so that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. He was buried at Cedar Hill. His body lies in the state at Metropolitan African Methodist Church in Washington. It was a sad day for his family, and for history.
