    Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born into a family of 5 in Tuckahoe, Maryland. Not only was this a large family but also a family of slaves.

    Frederick was moved out to Baltimore to work for Mr. Hugh Auld as a servant. Douglass was pleased to finally leave Captain Thomas Auld, Hugh's brother.
  • Learning the Basics

    Many slaves are dehumanized in many ways including not learning how to read and write. Shortly after Douglass moved to Baltimore, he started secretly learning how to read and write from Sophia Auld, the master's wife.

    Douglass was sent to work for Mr. Covey. Mr. Covey had a very bad reputation as the slave-breaker. If any slaves are being difficult, he is know to "break" their soul.

    Douglass is fed up with his master at this point and wants to escape. He plans an escape by using a canoe to escape by water, but his plan is revealed to Covey.

    Shortly after, Douglass was sent back to Baltimore. He was sent back to work in a shipyard where he fell in love with Anna Murray, a free woman.

    Douglass starts to expand his knowledge by reading The Liberator. This was written by an abolitionist which gave Douglass the courage to start a change and begin work as an anti-slavery advocate.
