  • 13th amendment

    Amendment passed by congress that abolished slavery or work similar to slavery. It is important because it got rid of slavery.
  • 14th amendment

    Amendment passed by congress that gave citizenship to all people born in the U.S. It is important because it gave citizenship to slaves.
  • 15th amendment

    Amendment passed by congress that gave African Americans the right to vote. This is important because it slowly gave African Americans more rights.
  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    A court case in which segregated facilities were found constitutional as long as the facilities were equal in quality. It is important because it started a lot of separation and inequality in the U.S.
  • Mendez vs. Westminster School District of Orange County

    First court case that ruled segregated schools as unconstitutional. It is important because it led to desegregation of all schools in the case Brown vs Board of Education.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Court case in which segregated schools were found to be unconstitutional. It is important because it was one of the first steps in ending segregation.
  • Arrest of Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. It is important because it sparked a huge protest and fueled the Montgomery buss boycott.
  • Montgomery bus boycott

    A boycott on buses because of the arrest of Rosa Parks. It is important because at the end of the boycott the Supreme court ruled segregation on buses as unconstitutional.
  • Sit-in Campaign

    A peaceful campaign by African Americans which was done by sitting in lunch counters until they were served. It is important because it was one of the first acts done peacefully.
  • Birmingham Campaign

    A series of peaceful marches and sit ins to end segregation in companies. This is important because although there was violence used against the protesters, the protesters were still peaceful and businesses started to come down and facilities were desegregated.
  • March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom

    A peaceful protest for civil rights. It is important because it helped with the passing of the civil rights act and it was all done very peacefully.
  • Freedom Summer

    A campaign to register many African Americans to be able to vote. It was important because it helped with passing the voting rights act.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Act passed by congress that prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, religion, etc. It is important because it was one of the first efforts by congress to get rid of all segregation.
  • Selma to Montgomery marches

    A peaceful march in which there was much violence and beatings done to the protesters. This is important because the violence was seen by the whole nation and it boosted the civil rights movement.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Act passed by congress that eliminated literacy test on African Americans in order to vote. It is important because African Americans now had a lot more say in the government.
  • Fair Housing Act of 1968

    Act passed by congress that eliminated discrimination in the selling of homes. It is important because it got rid of segregated neighborhoods.
