  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Made by Washington to declare American neutral in foreign affairs to keep us out of conflict.

  • XYZ Affair

    Three French agents demanded that the American diplomats pay them money before seeing French officials; this caused the relationship between France and America to decline

  • Convention of 1800

    Restored peace between France and the US.

  • Louisiana Purchase

    Land purchased from France that doubled the size of the US. Jefferson did not know if it was allowed by the Consitution.

  • Embargo Act

    Placed on foreign trade; hurt the US economy more than Britian and France; smuggling became popular during this time

  • War of 1812

    Caused by impressment from the British; included the Battle of New Orleans with Andrew Jackson; the end started the Era of Good Feelings

  • Treaty of Ghent

    Ended the War of 1812, conquered land was returned, and the borders of Canada and the United States were to be made.

  • Monroe Doctrine

    Made by James Monroe; did not want Europe to interfere with affairs in independent US nations; also stated that the Americas were not open for colonization
