    The Archduke and his wife get killed. The assassin was a man named Gavrilo Prinicip. Gavrilo was a Bosnian Serb. He made this act in order to break off Austria-Hungary's South Slav provinces. This is the killing that began the spark of World War 1.
  • War Begins

    War Begins
    Due to the chaos, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. This ruined their relations. This was caused from the assassination of the Archduke. This came to be known as the first war to be declared of World War 1.
  • Chains of War

    Chains of War
    After this, a chain of wars begin. Germany declares war on Russia, France, and Belgium. This causes Britain to declare war on Germany. Also, Austria declares war on Russia, and so on. Many wars are declared at this time.

    The first battle of Marne begins. German forces begin to attack France. Germany got very close to France's capital, Paris. At the last second, France gets reinforced by thousands of troops. Germany ends up digging up north. This is where trench-warfare begins.

    The second war of Ypres begins. This war is where Germans begin to their first chemical warfare. The Germans learn to use chlorine gas to attack their enemies. This gas on it's own killed 5,000 troops.

    This is the date where the battle of Verdun begins. This war lasts 10 months! Throughout this war, there was a concluding 700,000 casualties. In those casualties, 300,000 men were killed in action.

    The war of Somme begins. The British offensive is intended to draw German attention from Verdun. This was to stop Britain from losing so many troops. But by the end of the day, 20,000 troops were killed. This marks Britain's bloodiest day of their military history.

    America Joins
    America now joins the war. The president at this time is president Woodrow Wilson. He declare war on Germany to backup it's allies. A big reason to why the U.S. joins the war is because of Germany's use of unrestricted submarine warfare.

    Alvin's Draft
    Alvin registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, when he was 29. He ended up being drafted and going to the war on November 1. He began his service at Camp Gordon in Georgia. After camp, he then went to war.
  • Britain's Tanks

    Britain's Tanks
    Britain brings out one of their new inventions. This was their large-scale tanks. This completely surprised German forces. These British tanks ripped through German defense troops. The tanks also cause a lower cost in casualties and captures hundreds of enemy fighters.

    Near the end of Alvin's service, he was awarded a medal of honor. The cause of this was because him and his team went behind German lines. As they did this, they took out large amounts of German troops and took out enemy machine gunners. They also captured a large amount of enemies.

    On this day, is when the war finally ends. Germany ended up surrendering to their enemies. Also, all nations agreed to stop the war and all of their fights. The became to what we know is the Treaty of Versailles.

    After the war ended, Alvin finally returns back home. Throughout the war, he wrote in his diary about his experience. He became to be known as one of the most famous veterans of World War 1. He then meets his soon to be wife.
  • Alvin's Marriage

    After only a week from returning home, he meets his girlfriend. Her name was Gracie Williams. He shortly then marries her. The governor of Tennessee, Albert H. Roberts hosted their marriage in Pall Mall.
