Charlie writes his first progress report "My name is Charlie Gordon. I am 37 years old and 2 weeks ago was my birthday." (371) -
Charlie takes his first test
Charlie took his first test. He had to say what he thought ink splatters on white cards were, but they only looked like ink spills to him. "I think I failed it. and I think that maybe now they won't use me." (371) -
Charlie meets Algernon
Charlie races against Algeron in a maze and loses. "...they did it over 10 times with difernt amazeds and Algernon won every time." (374) -
Charlie is chosen
Charlie is chosen to be used in the experiement despite failing all of his tests. Dr. Strauss says that Charlie has motivation and that he's eager to please. "Their going to use me! Im so exited I can hardly write." (374) -
Charlie gets the operation
Charlie gets the operation that will make him three times smarter. "Im skared. Lots of people who work here and the nurses and the people who gave me the tests came to bring me candy and wish me luck. I hope I have luck." (375) -
Charlie works at the factory again
Charlie returns to work at the factory, but he's not allowed to tell anyone what his operation is for. "Im glad Im going back to work because I miss my job and all my frends and all the fun we have there." -
Charlie beats Algernon
Charlie finally beats Alergnon in the maze test. "I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon." (380) -
Miss Kinnian visits Charlie
Miss Kinnian comes to the labratory to teach Charlie. "She looked like she was glad to see me but scared." (380) -
Charlie realizes that people are mean to him
Charlie goes to a party with his friends and he ralizes that they just hang out with him to make fun of him. He didn't know before. "It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me." (383) -
Charlie asks Miss Kinnian out to dinner
Charlie asks Miss Kinnian out to eat dinner with him to celebrate his bonus. "I'm in love with Miss Kinnian." (388) -
Charlie quits his job
Charlie quits his job at the plastic box company because there was a petition signed by 840 people trying to get him fired. "Once again now I have the feeling of shame burning inside me. This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I once knew and loved." (389) -
Charlie gets bitten by Algernon
Algernon starts showing hostile traits and is uncoroperative. "He was unusually disturbed and vicious." (393) -
Charlie writes letter to Dr. Strauss
Charlie's letter describes what happened to Algernon and will inevitably happen to him. "I have checked and rechecked my results a dozen times in hope of finding an error. I am sorry to say the results must stand." (394) -
Algernon dies
Algernon dies and Charlie discovers that he slowly starting to lose his intelligence. "I guess the same thing is or will soon be happening to me. Now that it's definite, I don't want it to happen." (396) -
Charlie is back to normal
Charlie is once again at his normal intelligence rate and he can't read or write well or remember anything. "...don't be sorry for me Im glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I never even new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it all for a little bit." (401)
