Ferdinand Magellan presents his project to king Charles. A journey to find a route to the spice islands -
22 March 1518
The king names Magellan captain so that he could travel in search of the Spice Islands in July and gives him 5 ships -
10 August 1519 the fleet of 5 ships sets sail

Magellan lands near Rio de Janeiro -

For overwintering, Magellan established a temporary settlement called Puerto San Julian -
1st April 1520
A mutiny broke out involving three of the five ship captains. Magellan took quick and decisive action. Luis de Mendoza, the captain of Victoria, was killed by a party sent by Magellan, and the ship was recovered. -
After the Mutiny a new captain was appointed for the Victoria. The Santiago was sent down the coast on a scouting expedition and was wrecked in a sudden storm. All of its crew survived and made it safely to shore. Two of them returned overland to inform Magellan of what had happened.

At 52°S latitude on 21 October 1520, the fleet reached Cape Virgenes and concluded they had found the passage to the spice islands and traveled through it.

28 November 1520 Magellan assigned a ship to explore the passage, but the ship later returned to Spain leaving 3/5 ships

Heading northwest, the crew reached the equator -
16 March 1921 The crew with 150 members left reached the Philippians island Homonhon Becoming the first Europeans to reach the Philippians.

Rajah Humabon king of Cebu was friendly towards Magellan. both him and his wife (the queen) where baptized as Christians.

Rajah Humabon and his ally Datu Zula convinced Magellan to kill their enemy Lapu Lapu. Magellan wanted to convince Lapu Lapu to become a christian too but he later rejected.

Magellan sets sail to attack the enemy. in the battle Magellan was struck by a bamboo spear and later finished off with other weapons by the enemy -
After Magellan's death and the battle there wasn't enough crew to sail all 3 ships so 1 was burnt

On 6 November 1521
The 2 ships finally reach the spice islands. The 2 ships traded for valuable goods and started home -
The 2 remaining ships tried to return home but Trinidad started taking on water. The crew couldn't find the leak. Victoria the other ship was too small for both crews so some stayed behind. While Victoria continued. Trinidad tried to return several weeks later by retracing their steps but was taken over by Portuguese.

Victoria set sail through the Indian ocean route home commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano. 20 crew men died from hunger before they could reach Cape of good hope where he left 13 crew members in fear of losing cargo. On 6 September the remaining crew made it to Spain in the Victoria almost 3 years after the fleet departed!

Magellan did not intend to do a fill Circumnavigation of the globe he only wished for a secure route to the spice islands. But Elcno noticed that and pushed up Westward a bit completing the first Circumnavigation of the globe!
