Ferdinand Magellan (February 4, 1480 – April 27, 1521) was a Portuguese explorer who became a subject of the Hispanic Monarchy in 1518.He grew up in a wealthy family and served as a page in the royal court. Ferdinand Magellan and his crew traveled by ship. Magellan set sail from Spain on September 20, 1519, in search of a western sea route to Indonesia's rich spice islands. Early Life
Early Life - Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480, although it is not certain whether he was born in Porta or Sabrosa, Portugal. He was born to parents of nobility, who died when Ferdinand Magellan was only 10 years old.When he was 12, he started work as a page (a young servant in a royal court)for the Queen of Portugal.At school, he studied map-making, astronomy and navigation. He also loved sailing.
