Ferdinand Magellan was born on February 3, 1480, in Sabrosa, Portugal.

In 1517, Magellan asked King Manuel of Portugal time and time again to support his westward voyage, but to no avail. Frustrated, he sailed to Spain to ask for their funding, where finally it was granted to him by King Charles I.

On September 20, 1519, Ferdinand and five ships began sailing from Spain in an effort to find a Western sea route to the Indies for spices.

On Easter in 1520, Magellan's crew mutinied at Port San Julian. Magellan executed one captain and left the other behind, quickly putting an end to the mutiny.

On October 21, 1520, Magellan finally entered the treacherous and cold strait that would eventually be named after him.

In March of 1521, Magellan landed on the island of Guam, replenishing his food storage before sailing on to the Philipines. Once in the Philipines, Ferdinand befriended the natives and sought to convert them to Christianity.

On April 27, 1521, Ferdinand was killed by the Mactanese while helping his ally natives try and defeat them in Mactan, Philipines.
