    Mary McLeod Bethune created the National Council of Negro Women. This organization was not only for African American women but also campaigned for the rights of all women. This focused on the issues of discrimination, racism, and sexism.

    The federal law prohibed the dissemination of contraceptive information through the mail. And birth control information is no longer classified as obscene.

    California becomes the first state to adopt a "no fault" divorce law. This allowed couples to divorce by mutual consent. This allowed women to leave a marriage if they so chose and the idea of "til death do us part" no longer was a concept.

    The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was passed by Congress. The amendment reads: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This was a natinonal attempt to help women find careers and let them be able to provide for themselves if they so chose. However this amendment failed.

    Title IX of the Education Amendments bans sex discrimination in schools. It states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." This allowed women to participate in sports. Also schools had to allow equal number of male and female sports in order to make it fair for both genders.

    The Pregnancy Discrimination Act banned employment discrimination against pregnant women. This stated that a woman cannot be fired or denied a job or a promotion because she is or may become pregnant, nor can she be forced to take a pregnancy leave if she is willing and able to work. This allowed women to work if they wanted while pregnant but would also lead to the idea of maternity leave.

    EMILY's List (Early Money Is Like Yeast) was established as a financial network for pro-choice Democratic women running for national political office. This organization allowed women to increase their changes of entering political offices in Congress.

    The Violence Against Women Act tighted federal penalties for sex offenders, funds services for victims of rape and domestic violence, and provides for special training of police officers. This act helped women, and men, be protected in situations that are harmful. This kind of act didn't exist before 1994, so this helped people feel more secure and protected.

    The Supreme Court upholds the ban on the "partial-birth" abortion procedure. This was is first to ban a specific type of abortion procedure. This still allowed women to get an abortion but they had restraints. However with women still having a choice, they are able to make the decisions about their life and body.

    Throughout American history, women have fought to gain equal rights. This is evident witht the struggle with voting rights, women in office, mariiage rights, carreer choices and wages and the rights women have to their own bodies. It took sever decades for the voice of women to be heard by the overpowering men that ran the country. However with enough determination, women have started to recieve equal rights as men.
