    Executive Branch

    The Executive Branch started to form during the summer of 1789. Congress made three departments and two offices in the executive branch. Washington picked Jefferson to lead the state department, Hamilton to manage money in department of treasury, Henry Knox to department of war, and Edmund Randolph to be attorney general.

    In April 30,1789 George Washington became the first president of the United States. He knew he could turn this nation into a very strong and independent one by what he did. The people watched him closely because he was the first president.
  • The Bill of Rights

    The Bill of Rights was added in December 1791. These limited the powers of the government. James Madison introduced the Bill of Rights. They also protected individual liberty, rights to freedom of speech, and rights to those accused of a crime.
  • National Bank

    National Bank

    Hamilton was the first person to ask Congress for a national bank. This would hold government funds and pay off debts. It made a single type of currency throughout the nation. This helped trade and made it easier. Madison and Jefferson didn’t want a National Bank because they thought it was for the wealthy. Washington signed a Bill in 1791 and Congress made on in December 12,1791.

    The Whiskey Rebellion

    In 1791, Congress passed a tax on the making and selling of whiskey. This made a lot of farmers mad and they anger eventually turned violent and in July 1794,a mob attacked tax collectors and burned down buildings. Washington sent troops to face this challenge.

    In 1796 Jefferson and Hamilton started to form political parties. They disagreed about the meaning of the Constitution and power of government .The Federalist Party, led by Hamilton, favored a strong central government. They also thought the Constitution gave government powers that weren’t listed in it. The second party was the Democratic-Republican party. Led by Madison and Jefferson. They believed in what the Constitution said. These parties also debated on what the national bank should do.

    After serving two terms as president Washington decided not to go another term. Before he left he stated his displeasure about a threat to the nation, political parties.

    Matthew Lyon and Roger Griswold fight in House.

    These men started arguing and eventually fought on the floor of the House of Representatives in 1798. The Federalists tried to expel Lyon but failed. Eight months later and he was convicted under the Sedition act.

  • Jefferson elected as president

    Jefferson elected as president

    Jefferson was elected as president after tying with his running mate Aaron Burr. Since it was a tie, the House chooses the president.
