    1933 Agriculture Adjustment

    Among the law’s goals were limiting crop production, reducing stock numbers, and refinancing mortgages with terms more favorable to struggling farmers. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration was created to implement the act, and it was initially headed by George Peek – a man, ironically, not overly enthusiastic about the New Deal.
  • Farm Credit Act

    The signing of the Farm Credit Act, the FCA “could now provide credit for all types of agricultural activities” – short, intermediate, and long-term. Within Federal Land Banks new units called “Production Credit Corporations” and “Banks for Cooperatives” were created.
    By the end of the 1930s, it was “estimated that altogether about two million farmers were using acts under the Farm Credit Administration,” which had issued over $3,000,000,000 in credit.

    On Jan. 31, 1964, President Johnson requested Congress to pass legislation making the FSP permanent Among the official purposes of the Food Stamp Act of 1964 were strengthening the agricultural economy and providing improved levels of nutrition among low-income households; however, the practical purpose was to bring the pilot FSP under Congressional control and to enact the regulations into law.

    New titles included rural development, forestry, organic certification , and commodity promotion programs. The law established a Rural Development Administration (RDA) in the USDA to administer programs relating to rural and small community development. It also established that Forest Stewardship Program (FSP), the Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP), the Forest Legacy Program (FLP), and the Urban and Community Forestry Program.
