Create Physical Space
Clear carousel to create a table top work space for the students. Move computers to the iPad table. Move the magazines to create a place to store Maker Space supplies. Clear the dry erase board of papers to give students a place to brainstorm ideas. -
Read Lesson Resource
Resource for Science Inquiry Lessons with Picture Books Begin looking for lessons that would support the curriculum. Compile a "Needed Materials" list for the lessons. -
Meet with Administrator
Meet with administrators and evaluator to go over the idea of creating a Maker Space in the library. Explain that science lessons beg students to ask "I wonder" questions, leading to relevant research. Share timeline of the project and request permission to ask parents to donate needed supplies. These supplies tend to be odds and ends that most houses have and many can spare. These supplies can stored and used again, so more supplies will not be required the following year. -
Compose Letter
Compose and send a letter to parents explaining the Maker Space movement, and request volunteers to donate time or materials. -
Purchase Supplies
After all donationa are in, purchase remaining materials and storage containers with money from the Instructional Supply account. -
Volunteer Training
Meet with volunteers to discuss their roles acting as facilitators to the inquiry process, guiding students with questions rather than telling them what to do and how to do it. -
Student Grouping
Ask teachers for help in grouping students that will work together on this project. Prepare supplies for first lesson. -
Begin Lessons
Review "Permission to Photograph" list. Take pictures during the lessons. -
Create Digital Story
Create a digital story sharing the process of the Maker Space from start to finish using Haiku Deck. Share the story on the Colchester Elementary School Library website.
