    it was organized by Philadelphia garment workers in 1896. It was opened to all farmers, merchants and wagw earners. It set out to stop child labor, set equal pay for equal work, and 8 hour work days

    Labor day was meant to honor the acivements and hardship of American workers. The national holiday was based on the example New York set with their "workingmens day". As labors unions popularity increased so did th popularity of the holiday.

    The AFL focused more on better working conditions. Also they worked to get better pay along withunion labels on produced items. The're more craft oriented, focusing on workers like capenters, blacksmiths and masons.

    This riot was tot protest for 8-hour days in Chicago. The police had to come to break up the protest. 8 police men died and 100s were injured. This made people think unions and anarchists (anti-governments) as being a problem.

    The Homestead Strik was a major loss for labor unions. It focused on unionizing steel workers. The strike took place near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It was on of the most serious strikes in history.

    The town of Pullman was built ot house workers. When the Panic of 1893 struck the rents of these houses incresed and the workers couldn't afford it, but Mr. Pullman refused to lower the price. Strikers from 27 states participated until the leader, Eugene V. Debs, was imprisoned

    The strike consisted of anthracite coal miners of Easten P.A. The strike would have cut off winter fuel supply to major cities. President Theodore Roosevelt intervened and stopped the strike by offering the workers increased pay for fewer hours.

    This book was written by John Spargo. It reveled the life of child labor. In coal mines teh book talkes about coal breakers, and how this workers are treated, how much they work, for how much, possiable injuries, and ignorance of the kids.

    This was a federal lawthat requires inspection of food and medications. It made it illegal to manufacture, sale, on transport food or drugs that didn't make the cut. The book "The Jungle" played a big part in having this bil passed.

    This was the worst industrial accident in New York, and the 4th worse in the world. Most the victims were young people, the oldest was 48. Many people couldn't escape because the owners lock the doors so the employees can't leave. About 217 people died in all.

    The CIO was a part of the AFL untill 1935 when the two split. They broke away because CIO wanted to advocate industry workers rather than crafters. The CIO rejoined the AFL in 1955.

    This act allowed people to create legally reconized labor organizitons. It gave them the power to punish unfair labor practices. Thanks to this the National Labor Relations Board was made.

    General Motors employees shut down operations in Flint, Michigan. This strike was different because the workers came to work they just didn't do their jobs. President Roosevelt tried to stop this srike as well, but was over ruled by the Supreme Court. This became the first time workers had a say in running the country.

    This act finally put restrictions on child labor. There became a minimum age for workers. Also there became a minimum number of hours they could work.

    United Steelworkers of America protested against U.S. Steel. Harry Truman tried to nationalize the steel industry right before the workers left, but was overruled by the Supreme Court on lack of authroity. In the end the workers recevied a pay increase.
  • Major League Baseball Strike

    This was the first stirke in Major League baseball ever and lasted 13 days. The players agreed to resume playing with a $500,00 pension increase as well as additional salary increases. 86 total games were missed and never played because the league refused to pay the players for teh time they were on strike.
  • New York City Transit Strike

    New York City Transit Strike
    Thsi strike concerned the Transport Workers Union Local 100 in New York. IT was caused due to a break down with a contract concerning retirement, pension, and wage increases. The strike began at 3:00am and was watched over by the City Transit Authority. Millons of people were affected but finally the strike ended on December 22 at 2:35 pm.
