EVOLUTION OF THE CONCEPT OF DISABILITY

  • Second half of 19th century

    Special education was institutionalised.
  • 1960s

A ideological current appears that suggests approaches
towards a social and educational integration of people with disabilities
  • The General Law on Education

    Identifies deficient, maladjusted
    and gifted students.
This law consolidates general education for “the normal” and special centres are established for exceptionally gifted students.
  • Warnock report

A commitment is made to normalisation education for
students with disabilities who therefore require special educational needs
  • LOGSE

Introduces the concept of special needs and a new conception of Special Education within the general education system based on addressing diversity. Moreover, it also deals with the term normalisation and school integration.
  • LOCE

A rather limited vision of diversity oriented towards three differentiated groups and a totally specialised educational attention.
  • LOE

Introduces the term educational inclusion’, the quality of education and the need to respond to the diversity of the students.
  • LOMCE

The educational needs of these students should be identified, assessed and addressed as early as possible.
