The Printing Press (Number One)
The printing press was invented in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainez, Germany. By 1600 over 200 million new books had been created. It helped spread new ideas and ways of thinking. It sparked the age of enlightenment and the 30 Years War. It deepy impacted politics because it changed the way information spread and it made books/ideas available to the poor.

The Telegraph (Number 2)
The telegraph was invented by many between the 18th and 19th centuries. By 1850 telegraph lines began to spread and by 1902 transoceanic lines were spreading. This technology impacted politics because it changed the way we communicated. Governments could send messages long distances and could communicate with troops quickly during war.

Radio
The first simple radio was invented in 1901 by Guglielmo Marconi. The radio dramaticly shaped poltics because polticians could speak to the people.

The Television
Philo T. Farnsworth created the first crude television but it did not gain widespread popularity until the 1950s. In 1949 only around one million households owned televisions but by 1950 almost 10 million households owned one. Television changed politics by allowing all aspects of the political process to be televised. In the 50s TV stations began covering party presidential nominating conventions.

The Radio
The invention of the radio forever changed politics because it changed the way politicians communicated with the public. The radio allowed politicians to speak directly to the public. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did this when he gave his first of many Fireside chats where he updated the nation on the state of the country.

The Television
The invention of the television changed how we view politicians which, became clear after the 1960 presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Those who listened to the debate on the radio thought Nixon won, but those who watched JFK's charismatic style on TV thought he won.

24 Hour TV News
One of the biggest technological innovation that impacted politics was the creation of 24 hour TV news. In 1980 Ted Turner founded CNN which changed news and reporting forever. People could now watch the news anytime, get updates on events as they happened, and listen to opinion from reporters on political events.

Email
Shiva Ayyadurai began the creation of email in 1978, but it wasn't until 1989 that internet based email as we know it was created with the launch of AOL instant messaging with the famous phrase "You've Got Mail". This has enabled politicians to communicate quickly with voters. Politicians can now email political information to voters faster than ever before.

World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web in 1991 which transformed the internet into a "web" of information that anyone could look at. This allowed voters to look up political information as they never could before. It also allowed voters to learn more about politicians. It meant that politicians lost privacy because information about there lives is right there for anyone to see.

Facebook
The creation of Facebook in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg changed political communication. Social media has made politicians more accesible to the public and allowed politicians to gather information about voters quickly. It has also become a great way to reach young voters and in recent years a way to organize protests around political issues.

Youtube
Youtube was launched by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in 2005 and it is now the third most visited site in the U.S. People can post videos of polticians or even mix them into videos that often go viral. These videos can either help a polticians image or destroy it. An example is Howard Dean's scream that doomed his campaign.

Iphone
Apple under CEO Steve Jobs released the first Iphone in 2007. Smartphones such as the Iphone have shaped politics because now voters can access information and news anytime and anywhere. People can now stay in touch with politics 24/7.
