Columbine High School Shooting
Two twelfth grade students opened fire killing and injuring a total of over 20 students. This was known at the time to be the largest and worst high school mass shooting to date ("Columbine Shooting ", 2019). This sparked protests in gun laws, which is still an ongoing situation. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This bill was started in 2001, but was in act in 2002. By law, states are required to test students in math and reading in grades 3 to 8, and once again in high school to create fairness, equality, and a higher quality education ("No Child Left Behind Act Of 2001", n.d.). There are four pillars to this bill: accountability, flexibility, research- based education, and parent options ("No Child Left Behind Act Of 2001", n.d.). -

This was signed by President Obama. It reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) ("Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)", n.d.). It is a national law and commitment to an equal opportunity of education for all students ("Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)", n.d.). -
