    The First Fire Engine
    The first firetruck was made in 1720. It didn’t have the technology even close to what we have now. It had a waterpump, handpumps and resevoirs. It was called the Little Newshan. The Little Newshan sprayed sixty gallons a minute which is equal to the amount of two garden hoses. The invention had four wheels that where made of wood so it could be moved from place to place. Since there was no such thing as sirens back then the firefighters would use bells and whistles to alert people to move out

  • Horse Drawn Carriages

    Horse Drawn Carriages
    Title: Later in the 19th century. Fire engines became horse drawn carriage in which the horses wore special shirts. The hoerses had to wear the special shirts so if they caught on fire they would not get burned.

    In 1852 the use of engines was beginning to spread across the country. That was when the use of steam engines was introduced
  • Introduction of the Ladder

    Ladder's began to be installed on the fire trucks. Since the size of building were increasing so this was very important. It was important for the ladder's to be used because the firefighters needed to reach the upper levels of the vastly changing buildings. The invention allowed the firefighters to reach up to one hundred and fiftty feet in the air.

    In the early 20th century the final change was made to fire engines. A gasoline powered or internal combustion engine firetruck. This is the firetruck we still use today.
