    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri wanted to be admitted into a slave state, but that would unbalance the free and slave states. There for the Missouri Compromise was made by the senate to balance the slave and free states. The senate came up with the plan that Missouri can become a slave state but Main would branch off from Massachusetts and become a free state.     Wilmot Proviso
    Wilmot Proviso devised a plan that specified that slavery would not be allowed in the acquired land from Mexico. This made southerners furious; the southerner’s hatred for the Union only started to grow from here.

    The Fugitive Slave Act required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves. If people were caught helping the slaves they would be fined and or put in prison. This made the North infuriated because this act was making them go against what the believed.

    The Compromise of 1850 made it so California was a free state and New Mexico would have no restriction on slavery. At the same time the Texas New Mexico border dispute would end in New Mexico’s favor. This was just another compromise the senate made to keep the US as a whole.

    Proslavery and antislavery groups were in Kansas arming themselves when violence broke out. Lawrence Kansas was destroyed along with 2,000 people. Kansas after the violence broke out became a free state.

    Dred Scott was a famous slave because he sued against his owner for his freedom. His case eventually went to the Supreme Court because it was dealing with his rights. Dred Scott lost because the Supreme Court said he did not have the right to sue because he wasn't a citizen.

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
    The Lincoln Douglas debates were against Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Stephan Douglas was against slavery, but thought it should be up to each state to decide if they were going to have slavery. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery but thought it wasn't up to Congress. This was the first time the South got to see Abraham Lincoln and it made the South fear him.
  • The Raid on Harper's Ferry

    The Raid on Harper's Ferry
    The raid on harpers ferry was led by John Brown and less than 30 other men. John Brown and his "gang" took the owners of plantations hostage at an arsenal in hope that the slaves would rise up and fight back. This plan went quickly south and General Robert E Lee was sent to take out John Brown's "gang". Many died in the standoff, including John Brown's only to sons.     Abraham Lincoln was elected even though his name wasn't on the ballet in some southern states. When Abraham Lincoln was elected it pushed the South even closer to seceding.

    The threat of leaving the Union became very real when South Carolina seceded from the Union. South Carolina motivated other states to secede from the Union and clearly showed that war was near.
