    The United Nations voted Israel a state on November 29th, 1947 and The British fulfilled their mandate over Palestine in 1948. War broke out between the Arabs and Jews soon after.
  • Formation of NATO

    Formation of NATO
    NATO is a group of 12 nations including the U.S. and Canada. The formation of this group occurred due to fear of the Soviet Union, and the desire to have allied defense against the Soviet Union.
  • Formation of the Warsaw Pact

    Formation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact, an alliance, formed between USSR and Eastern Europe due to fear when West Germany joined NATO. India and china surprisingly remained unaligned.

    Arab-Israeli Conflict: 1956
    Israeli forces launched a combined air and ground assault into Egypt's Sinai peninsula. The action against Egypt was severely condemned by the nations of the world and a cease-fire was promoted by the United Nations with U.S. and Soviet support.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Cuba was hiding nuclear missiles for the Soviet Union and when the U.S. discovered the missiles, Cuba was viewed as a threat so the U.S. placed blockades surrounding Cuba. The U.S. was very close to nuclear war with the Soviet Union, but the Soviets agree to remove missiles if U.S. doesn't invade CUba.

    Arab-Israeli Conflict: 1973
    Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Using major surprise attack, Egyptian troops attacked the Sinai Peninsula and Syrian troops in the Golan Heights. Israel counterattacked and war broke out for a couple weeks. A cease-fire went into effect October 25. 1973.

    USSR Invades Afghanistan
    The Muslims threaten the communist government so the Commmunists/Soviets invade Afghanistan. The new Soviet President finally withdrew troops in 1989(10 years later).
  • Assassination of Egytian President Sadat

    Assassination of Egytian President Sadat
    Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat was shot by Muslim extremists on Yom Kuppar. During the following hours, with Sadat dying in the hospital, the news and the people were very concerned on whether their president was dead or not.

    Mikhail Gorbachev pursued new ideas that lead to economic change and Democatization.The Soiviet Union stopped communist and forms the Commonwealth of Independent States. Russia later shifts to freee-market economy under Yeltsin.
  • Assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Rabin

    Assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Rabin
    After attending a peace rally held in Israel, Rabin was shot in the arm by a law student named Amir. He shot Rabin because the prime minister wanted “to give our country to the Arabs.” Prime Minister Rabin later died in surgery. Peres succeeded him as the next prime minister.
