    American Civil War

    The American Civil War was started becuase of arguments between the free and slave states to ban slavery in territories that were not states yet. In 1860 after Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, seven slave states formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America. After all the fighting, the war ended when the Union Calvary captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclomation stating that all persons held as slaves are now free. The Emancipation Proclamation is a huge step to all races considered equal.

    the 14th amendment ratified
    The 14th amendment was ratified on July 9, 1868 and states, "All persons born or naturalized in the united states, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States, and of the state wherein they reside" And, "nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." The point of this amendment is to show that all races are equal and whites aren't held higher.

    The fifteenth amendment was ratified at the end of
    March and granted African American men the right to vote. Also that United States citizens right to vote should not be turned down becuase of race, color, or of heritage.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    Homes Plessy was,30 - years old and lived in Louisiana, and Louisiana made a law about seperate train carts that he believed was unconstitutional. So he decided to sit on the white car and was arrested although he was 7/8's white and 1/8 black. The case went to the Supreme Court, and the lawyer said that this law went against the 13th and 14th amendment. The judge found this constitutional because they were,"seperate but equal."

    NAACP is founded
    On 1909 in New York City the NAACP was formed the fight for civil rights by a group of white and black people. The goal was to stop Jim Crow laws and norms and to get whites and blacks equal. They also wanted for blacks to stop being harmed and to get the same treatment whites get from others.

    Grandfather Clause Outlawed
    The Grandfather clause is outlawed by the Supreme Court becuase it goes against the rights in the 15th amendment. It disregarded equal voting rights that were confirmed in the 15th amendment.

    Jackie Robinson joins Brooklyn Dodgers
    The best professional baseball leagues had a "gentleman's agreement" to keep black players from the field. The general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey broke this agreemet when he added a black player to the team, Jackie Robinson.

    Rosa Parks Doesn't Give Up Her Seat For a White Person on the Bus.
    Rosa Parks gets on a bus after a long day of work to go home. She sits down in the white only section because no white people are standing. As more people get on the bus, one white person ends up standing. So the bus driver tells all the people in the first row of the colored section to move to the back of the bus where there are no more seats. Everyone but Rosa Parks moves. She's told she'll be arrested and still doesn't move. So she is arrested. This is a big step in the civil rights movement.

    March on Washington
    About a quarter of a million people were included in the March on Washington and marched from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. The point of the march on washington was to try to get Congress to pass civil rights legislation.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Arrested

    Martin Luther King Jr. Arrested
    Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Abernathy were arrested for protesting segregation at a hotel pool in St. Augustine FL. The hotel manager told them multiple times to move, and they didn't move so they King and Abernathy were arrested.

    Civil RIghts Act
    The Civil Rights Act stated that you can not be turned down for a job based on race or religion. This created the Equal Employment Opportuniy Commission.
