  • Roanoke

    Roanoke
    Roanoke was the first temporary British Colony, under leadership of John White . White returned to England for supplies. When he returned after 3 years the settlement was deserted. The only clue that was left was the word "croatoan" in a tree.

  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    The colony of Jamestown was the first permanent settlement of the British. Jamestown got off the a bad start for many reasons and only 38 out of 150 survived. They learned how to grow to tobacco and that became it's first export and indentured servants were introduced.

  • Salutary Neglect

    Salutary Neglect
    The Salutary Neglect was Britian's unoffical policy, fro 1609-1763, to keep the colonies under eaiser rules, and trade laws. Rules became less strict as long as the colonies remained loyal to the British. This leads to American Independence.

  • New York

    New York
    Modern day New York was originally founded by the Dutch in 1614. The Dutch named it New Amsterdam in 1626. But then in 1664 the English took New Amsterdam over and later called it New York, named after the Duke of York.

    House of Burgesses
    The House of Burgesses was the first governing body in the colonies. It was established by George Yeardleyat Jamestown in 1619.

  • Mayflower/Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower/Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact
    The Pilgrams boarded a ship named "The Mayflower. The ship was meant to land in Virgina with the other English settlers, but the ship never made it. They landed in modern Cape Cod and named their settlement "Plymouth". The Mayflower Compact was the first self government document and was made on the Mayflower.

    The Great Puritan Migration

  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    The Puritans settled the Bay colonies. They were giving a charter from King Charles I, and the Puritan laws were tied heavily to the church. Lead by Governor John Winthrop, the puritans made people follow the same beliefs. If a person did not follow, they were considered dissenters, people who didn't follow Puritan Rules.

  • Maryland

    Maryland
    The Maryland Colony was founded in 1632, when King Charles I granted a charter to Cecil Calvert and Lord Baltimore. It was known for a "safe haven" for Catholics. Many tolerents started making they're way to Maryland as well. Thus, lead Maryland to pass the Maryland Toleration Act.

  • Connecticut

    Connecticut
    It was founded by Thomas Hooker and other puritans. The Dutch and English both wanted the land, but the English ended up getting the land.

  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
    Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636. Roger founded it based religous freedom. Roger Williams ws banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colonies and found his own. The reason for the name Rhode Island is still unkown.

  • Maryland Toleration Act

    Maryland Toleration Act
    The Maryland Toleration Act was composed to ensure religous freedom in the Colony of Maryland. This was the first lawful document in the colonies that all people od the colonies had to follow.

  • Carolina

    Carolina
    King Charles II granted 8 supporters land, which would become the Carolina's. They began to trade with people in the West Indies, and grew many crops. They had numerous slaves and by 1720 the slaves doubled the population of the colonists.

  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Nathaniel Bacon raise an army or poor people to retaliate attacks by the Native American's. The governor of Virginia, William Berkeley gathered an army to fight against Bacon's when Bacon got out of hand. Bacon died and the rebellion was soon over.

  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
    King Charles I granted a charter to William Penn. It was known as a "Holy Experiment". They gave every male settler 50 acres and the right to vote. William Penn was a Quacker and soon was most of the colony. Quackers are very peaceful people like modern day hippies.

  • Salem Which Trails

    Salem Which Trails
    In the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Local people started accusing townspeople of which craft. Over this time 150 people were imprisoned, 7 died, and 19 people were found guilty. Many believe this was caused by what is considered now an illegal drug, getting in people's food and the people eating the drug.

  • The Great Awakening/Enlightenment

    The Great Awakening/Enlightenment
    By the 1730's and 1740's religion got annoying and stale and many people beggining to lose interest. But during this time Christina leaders began going from town to town preaching the gospel. This heavily impacted the colonist to turn back to Christ.

  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    The Albany Plan was a attempt to connect all the British colonies together and be under one government and society. Representatives from 7 of the colonies adopted the plan. The Albany Plan never worked out, but it was the first attempt to unite the colonies.

  • French-Indian War

    French-Indian War
    Know as the 7 year war that lasted from 1756-1763, the war was fought between the British and the French. The French started to get closer to the British colonies, which really set the British off. Both sides has a string of victories before both sides resolved to the Treaty of Paris. The French gave Canada to the British and Spain gave Florida. The Spanish ended up receiving Louisiana from the British.

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by the British at the End of the French-Indian War. It created an imaginary line called the Proclamation Line. It seperated Native American from the colonies on the east. Anything west of the Appalachian Mountains was natives land and the British couldn't go over their. In return teh natives had to leave the colonies alone.
