  • First Slaves landed on Jamestown

    First Slaves landed on Jamestown
    On 1619, a Dutch ship carrying slaves accidentally landed on Jamestown. This brought the first slaves in America which caused slavery and this led to the Civil War because this event is where it all started.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri applied for admission as a state to union. Maine wanted admission as a new free state. Missouri was passed as a slave state in 1820 and Maine admitted as a free state. An amendment was proposed by Jesse B. Thomas which forbid slavery in the remains of the Louisiana Territory (36° 30' parallel) and this led to the Civil War by setting a territorial boundary where slavery states were and where free states stand.
  • The California Gold-Rush

    The California Gold-Rush
    Traces of gold was found on foothills of Sierra Nevada, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to California to find gold and get rich. This increased California's population and ethnicities. Many people didn't find gold but stayed in California, which caused tensions of the territory to be turbulent and needed to establish a stable and effective government, this caused the U.S. to resolve status for all territories and slavery as well which people disagreed on, this event led to the Civil War.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    Nicholas P. Trist, Chief Clerk of the State Department, reached an agreement with the new Mexican government on the Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty which gave California, New Mexico, and the acknowledgment of the Rio Grande as the boundary of Texas for 15$ Million. This event led to the Civil war by America gaining more territory leading to questions of what status the states would be put, free states or slave states.

    A law which was very harsh and crucial, people pursued and captured runaway slaves back to their owners, this event contributed to the Civil War by the harsh treatment of slaves by the government officials and other people.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    An antislavery fictional novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe which promoted abolition and sensational effects towards slavery. This event contributed and led to the Civil War by letting the people find out how bad slaves were actually being treated.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre

    Pottawatomie Massacre
    John Brown and six other followers (four of his sons) murdered five pro-slavery settlers and chopped the bodies into pieces and left them as an example from people coming in into Kansas who supported slavery. This event led to the Civil War because nothing was done about John brown or done to the many others who did the same.
  • Dred Scott decision

    Dred Scott decision
    Dred Scott, a black slave, sued for his freedom on free territory land after the death of his master. The Supreme Court said Dred Scott was a black slave (property) and not a citizen, so therefore he could not sue which defeated an antislavery movement.This event led to the Civil War by questioning the Missouri Compromise if it was unconstitutional.

    John Brown's Raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry
    John Brown, an antislavery zealot from KS, led a group of eighteen followers, took over control of a U.S. arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Hoping to lead a slave rebellion uprising which never occurred, later was found guilty and hanged. This event led to the Civil War, this raid made the southerners believe they couldn't live in harmony and safely in the union.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Election of Abraham Lincoln
    Abraham Lincoln wins the election of 1860 winning almost all of the free states. This election becomes a sign for southerners that position in the union is hopeless, and also causes disunion within weeks of election. This election led to the Civil War.
