    Invention of the Cotton Gin

    An effort by Congress to defuse the sectional and political rivalries as a result of the request of Missouri late in 1819 for admission as a state in which slavery would be permitted. While expanding westward, it became difficult to choose whether a new state would be a free state or a slave state.

    In 1828, Congress passed a tariff that seemed to only benefit the northerners. Southerners labeled this tariff the Tariff of Abominations because it shrunk demand for southern raw cotton and increased the final cost of finished goods. It was good for the North but bad for the South.

    Introduced by Henry Clay, this was a series of resolutions to avoid more conflict between the North and the South. The Fugitive slave act was amended. Slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished. (libertyofcongress.gov)

    After Lincoln was elected president many southern states seceded from the union. Sothern states wanted to separate from the union to form their own nation. This was unacceptable to president Lincoln , so a war had to happen.
