The United states made an invisible line that divided free and unfree states.If you were north of the line then you were a non slave state and if you were south of the line you were a slave state. And they were deciding wether california should be a free or slave state because the invisible line cut it in half. -

Douglas wanted a northern Rail Road route but needs southern support.
If the south goes along w/northern route the missouri compromise line will be erased
