  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    The Missouri compromise was the agreement proposed by Henry Clay in 1820, that made any state above the Southern border of Missouri a free state. and it also made any state below a slave state. Due to Missouri being a slave state to keep balance Maine was made into a free state. Tensions were rising as slavery was slowly becoming less and less popular. This would soon lead to our nations civil war.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    Wilmot's Proviso proposed for all of the territory won in the Mexican-American war to be a completely slave free region. It happened in the first place because the Mexican government invited Americans into the Texas territory in hopes that they would help them overthrow the Spanish forces. Instead, the Mexican forces were outnumbered by Americans. Eventually Mexicans and Americans got into a war in which Americans took over all of Texas. In the end though, Texas was admitted as a slave state.

    t was the compromise that tried to limit slavery in some areas but allowed it to move passed the Boundary. This act was very conflicting because it allowed slavery to spread. But at the same time it was limiting it in other areas. This act was proposed by Senator Clay and put into place January 29 1850

    It was the act allowing for the capture and return of escaped slaves. This was debatably the worst act because it was abused and white people sometimes took free black men. All it took to abduct somene was a small accusation. That is why protests began to increase after this act was legalized.     Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a book revealing the horrors of slavery. It was written by Harriet Beacher Stowe and started many protests in the North. It was called a hyperbolic novel by the South and accused Harriet of exaggerating everything. Abraham Lincoln once said, “So you’re the women who started this little war”
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act
    The Kansas/Nebraska territory was in debate over what type of state to be. So it was split into two states. One state was pro slavery (Kansas) and the other was a free state (Nebraska). This started conflicts in Kansas because anti slavery protestors moved their in hopes to make another free state. But officials disregarded peoples votes and began an outrage of protests even though it was based upon popular sovereignty, This ws called bleeding Kansas.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott was a slave who’s slave owner died while he was traveling leading Dred Scott thinking he was free. He was later taken into slavery 3 months after his owner died. He later decided to sue the court for denying his civil rights. The ruling later was that he was to be sold off to another owner after 10 years of deciding. He then sued again and gained his freedom and brought attention to the issue of slavery. The ending was bad for slavery because it legalized slavery in every state
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    These were a series of debates in Illinois between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass. They were fiery arguments mostly based on the subject of slavery. Lincoln and Douglass were competing for the spot in senate. While Stephen Douglas won this election, this opened up the way for Abraham Lincoln to become president.
  • John Brown's raid

    John Brown's raid
    John brown was an avid abolitionist, and considered an extremist abolitionist by other abolitionists. He believed that war and violence was the only way to take action, and the only way to get rid of slavery. He led a raid with other abolitionists in a federal armory in Harper Ferry, West Virginia. This area had been a pro-slave area at the time, and many were outraged in the south because of his raids. John Brown did all of this because he thought it was his duty because the bible told him to.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
    Lincoln continued to run for election and ended up winning this time in 1860. All free states ended up voting for him and liked his pollicies. However the South/slave states did not vote for him and were very pro-slavery. This once again showed the huge difference between opinions at this time.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    The most serious attempt at secession was advanced in the years 1860 and 1861 as eleven southern States each declared secession from the United States, and joined together to form the Confederate States of America. The southern secession happened after the nations tension rose beyond the breaking point. The final breaking point was when Lincoln was elected. South Carolina Was first to secede, with another southern state seceding every day after.
