  • Bleeding Kansas

    Cause: Kansas and Nebraska are established as territories, which adopts popular sovereignty.
    Effect: Popular sovereignty allows residents of the territories to determine if their state will be free or enslaved.

    Cause: A slave named Dred Scott tried to sue for freedom in court.
    Effects: The Supreme Court found that Dred Scott had no legal rights as he was considered a piece of property.
