Many disagreements between South and North mainly about economy and slavery -
Compromise of 1850
The South and North were both arguing over to make new territories free or slave and the compromise was necessary to avoid more conflict.
stated that Slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia. California would be admitted as a free state, two Kansas and Nebraska could vote on weather to be slave or free, and the compromise created the Fugitive Slave Act. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This law was passed that allowed runaway slaves to be captured and brought back to their owners. This angered Northerners that helped runaway slave because it would mean they would be thrown in prison -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This book was pulished to let Northerners know the evils of slavery. The South thought it was aboistionist propaganda and got angry. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act allowed the people of Kansas and Nebraska to vote weather they should be free or slave. Many people moved here to change the votes into what they wanted which resulted in Bleeding Kansas. -
Bleeding Kansas
The Kansas-Nebraska Act caused people to move to the area and have a small scale civil war wich lasted four months and caused 200 deaths -
Dred Scott Decision
A slave sued for his freedom after his owner died. The court ruled that slaves were property, not people and therefore could not sue in a court. They also rule that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. The South was overjoyed and northerners were anry and started joining the Republican party. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas were running for Senator of Illionois in 1858 and Lincoln said that slavery was wrong bt protected by the Constitution. This made him lose many vots and therefore he lost the election but he gained the favor of the Republicans. -
Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown and followers seized the federal arsenal in hopes of starting a slave rebellion. They killed Four people and din't start anything. He and his folowers were found guilty and were executde. Became a matyr. -
Election of 1860
The political parties split and the North had more people than the South so they chose Lincoln. Lincoln promised to stop the spread of slavery. The South said that if Lincoln was elected, they would secede. The South said that all states had a right to leave the Union because they voluteered to be in the Union. -
Confederate States of America
After Abraham Lincoln was elected, South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. It was followed by the rest of the South and they named their government The Cofederate States of America. They elected Jefferson Davis to be the president and their Constitution protected slavery and encouraged states rights. -
Fort Sumter
The first battle of the Civil War. "The most bloodless battle in the bloodiest war in US history"
Only a horse was killed i this battle.
